Guitar Shephard Tone

Sunday, May 17th, 2009

I’m doing the score and sound design for a film some friends are making. The film takes place on a submarine which is stuck underwater, fully submerged, with a small crew of men who are running out of air. We decided pretty quickly that creaking metal sounds and a slow-harmonic descent would be a little too literal, but I really needed to get it out of my system.

This is not technically a Shephard tone on several accounts, but it provides something close to the psychoacoustic phenomena of a constantly descending pitch / set of pitches. Whenever I listen to it I immediately have flashbacks of listening to The Sinking of the Titanic in college.

This was done on a ’94 Tele Plus and a ’68 Ampeg Gemini VI.
